Here are two universal truths about my students: 1. My students love to have fun. 2. My students have a ton of energy. In fact, there is almost nothing I can say that will more quickly capture their attention than, “let’s do something fun”. I have taken to reinforcing my classroom management through fun and it works brilliantly!
In an attempt to gain control of the crazy amount of energy my students generate at the end of each day, we spend the last ten minutes of our school days playing a “game”. And, because I am all about reinforcing a classroom management skill anywhere I can, our games usually centre around practising one of our agreed upon classroom norms: listening, following instructions, and building relationships to name a few.
In the spirit of transparency, we start our games with a brief class discussion about what skill we are exercising. Then, we give it a snazzy title and we are off the to the races. A current class favourite is “Who Can it Bee?”. This game helps us build relationships within our classroom by increasing the students' understanding of how they can help each other be successful in different situations.
