Online board games provide an immersive and interactive way to engage students in language learning.

ESL Online Board Games

The objective of online board games is to engage students in a playful and interactive learning experience. By selecting from a diverse range of over fifty topics such as animals, fruit, colours, daily routine and hobbies, students embark on a virtual journey that integrates vocabulary review, pronunciation practice and language production tasks. Students develop their vocabulary, pronunciation and language skills while enjoying the excitement of a board game format.

How To Play

Set Up:

Select a vocabulary set from the dropdown menu, featuring a wide range of over fifty topics. Introduce or review the words that will be used in the game, ensuring students understand their meanings and pronunciation. Model and practise the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary with the students.

Game Setup:

Ask each player to choose a colour and move their counters to the starting position on the board.

Take turns rolling the dice and moving forward around the board, following the number indicated by the dice roll.

Interaction with Squares:

When a player lands on a square, click on it to increase the image size and reveal the content associated with that square.

Depending on the students’ level and class objectives, you can ask them to say or spell the word, create a sentence or question using the word, or answer a general knowledge question related to the word.

Language Tasks and Feedback:

If the students successfully complete the language task associated with the square, they can stay on the square.

If they struggle to provide the correct answer, you can ask them to move back to the previous square or try again.

Throughout the game, provide feedback to students on their performance, offering both positive reinforcement and constructive suggestions to help them improve their vocabulary, pronunciation and language skills.

Winning the Game:

The winner of the game is the player who reaches the end of the board first, demonstrating their progress in vocabulary acquisition and language proficiency.

Benefits of Online Board Games

Vocabulary Expansion:

The wide range of topics available in the dropdown menu allows for comprehensive vocabulary development in various areas of interest.

Engaging with the vocabulary through the game format enhances students’ word retention and facilitates vocabulary expansion.

Pronunciation Practice:

Modelled pronunciation and practice opportunities within the game help students improve their spoken language skills and pronunciation accuracy.

The interactive nature of the game encourages students to speak and use the vocabulary in a meaningful context.

Language Production and Skills Development:

The game prompts students to produce language by creating sentences, questions, or answering general knowledge questions related to the vocabulary.

Through these tasks, students develop their language skills, including sentence formation, grammar usage and critical thinking.

Feedback and Improvement:

Providing ongoing feedback throughout the game helps students gauge their progress, identify areas for improvement and build upon their vocabulary, pronunciation and language skills.

Feedback can be a mix of positive reinforcement for correct answers and constructive suggestions for areas that need improvement. This feedback loop supports students’ growth and motivates them to further enhance their language abilities.
