How to Plan an Online ESL Lesson for Kids

Planning an online ESL lesson for kids doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right structure, you can create a fun, effective learning experience.

A well-balanced online lesson for young learners usually includes four simple stages. Structuring your class this way helps children stay focused, builds confidence and keeps energy levels high from start to finish.

Warm-up or Review

  • Start with a short, low-pressure activity to get your students speaking, thinking in English and ready to engage. This is also a great chance to review ESL vocabulary from previous lessons or introduce the day’s topic in a fun, informal way.

💡 Tip: Keep it quick and visual. 5 minutes is plenty.

Try:
Spin and Say – spin the wheel and name vocabulary items
Flashcards – practise words with quick recall or guessing games
Categories – brainstorm words in a topic (e.g. fruit, colours, animals)

Focus on Target Language

Now that your students are warmed up, it’s time to introduce the main focus of the lesson, whether it’s new vocabulary, a grammar point, or a functional language skill.
Use clear visuals, short explanations and interactive games to present new language. Let students discover the meaning through play and context.

💡 Tip: Keep instructions simple and support new words with pictures whenever possible.

Try:
Vocabulary Match – match words to pictures (great for themed lessons)
Grammar Quizzes – practise comparatives, superlatives, or tenses
Secret Code – decode the hidden word to reinforce vocabulary

Practice and Production

This is the heart of the lesson where students use what they’ve learned. Choose an interactive ESL speaking activity that encourages full sentences, personal responses, or creative storytelling.
Encourage children to express themselves freely, even if they make mistakes. This stage is all about building fluency and confidence.

💡 Tip: Model the activity first and give sentence starters if needed.

Try:
Describe the Scene – build full sentences using new words
Roll a Story – create fun stories using characters, places, and objects
Talk for a Minute – challenge students to speak non-stop for 30–60 seconds

Wrap-up or Extension

End your lesson with a short review, reflection, or playful challenge. This helps consolidate learning and gives students a clear sense of completion. You can also use this time to prepare for the next lesson or assign a light follow-up task.

💡 Tip: Choose something fun and fast-paced to end on a high note.

Try:
True or False Quiz – check comprehension in a playful way
Tic Tac Toe – a fun way to practise vocabulary or sentence structure
Trivia Questions – reinforce the topic while having fun
