In the world of online ESL teaching, incorporating interactive games and activities can make language learning a more enjoyable and valuable experience for young learners.
As you might already know, our mission is to make language learning more fun! Games are a wonderful way to learn and practise vocabulary in a stress-free, fun environment.
With that in mind, we are introducing an online memory game to our ever-growing collection of interactive online games, specifically designed for children aged 6 to 12 years old.
Memory is a classic card game that is a common family favourite. We’ve adapted it to play online with no extra equipment needed. Perfect for sharing your screen during an online lesson or to play in the classroom on an interactive whiteboard.
How To Play
Select the vocabulary set:
Begin by choosing a vocabulary set from the dropdown menu. There are over fifty topics to choose from, such as animals, fruit, colours, daily routine, hobbies and more. You can select a vocabulary set to match your teaching objectives or your students’ interests.
Introduce and review the words:
Before starting the game, take a moment to introduce or review the words that will be used. Provide clear explanations and examples, ensuring your students understand the meanings and context of the vocabulary. Model and practise each word, allowing students to repeat the words with correct stress and pronunciation.
Start the Game:
Display the cards to your students. Click on the deck to start the game and shuffle the cards. Explain to your students that the aim of the game is to match the pictures with the corresponding written words. This task challenges their memory and vocabulary retention skills while promoting active engagement.
Taking Turns:
Ask your students to take turns choosing two numbers. When a student selects two cards, reveal them one at a time by clicking on them. Encourage your students to repeat the word on the card each time it is revealed.
Finding Matching Cards:
As the game progresses, your students will start to remember the locations of the cards, stimulating their memory recall abilities. Encourage them to utilise their memory skills actively, strengthening their cognitive abilities.
Celebrating Success:
When two matching cards are clicked, two flashing stars will appear, signalling a correct match. Celebrate each successful match by using positive language and gestures. Mark each successful match down as a point.
Follow up questions:
Depending on their level, you can ask your students a question about each word or ask them to put it in a sentence.
Determining the Winner:
At the end of the game, count the number of matching pairs each student has found. The student with the most matches is declared the winner. Acknowledge the effort and achievements of all participants, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.
This game can be played online in 1-1 lessons, with small groups and in the classroom on an interactive whiteboard.
The online memory games provide an interactive and engaging way for children to practise and reinforce their English language skills.
Incorporate the suggested instructions in your teaching practice and witness the benefits of using gamified approaches in language education. Let the power of play propel your students towards proficiency in English while having fun along the way.
