Fun St Patrick’s Day Activities for Children Learning English
-By Sarah
St Patrick’s Day on 17th March is a wonderful opportunity to bring a colourful cultural theme into the classroom. With its bright symbols, playful legends and themes of luck, it provides a perfect context for vocabulary building, speaking activities and creative projects.
We’ve created a collection of St Patrick’s Day worksheets, games and crafts designed to help children practise English while exploring the traditions and symbols associated with the celebration.
These activities are flexible and can easily be adapted for different age groups and language levels.

St Patrick’s Day Vocabulary Activities
Introducing key vocabulary helps students feel confident before moving on to speaking or writing activities. St Patrick’s Day offers a fun and memorable set of themed words such as shamrock, rainbow, leprechaun, pot of gold, horseshoe and Ireland.
The collection includes several vocabulary-based activities that help reinforce these words in an engaging way.
The word swirl encourages students to scan the puzzle and recognise themed vocabulary. This activity is great as a warm-up or early finisher task.
The crossword helps learners practise spelling and recall vocabulary by using picture clues to complete the puzzle.
Students can also practise vocabulary through play with the memory game, where they match picture cards with the correct word cards.
Together, these activities help students become familiar with the key words associated with St Patrick’s Day while keeping them engaged and motivated.

Reading and Writing Activities
Once students are comfortable with the vocabulary, they can begin using it in reading and writing tasks.
The true or false, reading comprehension introduces a short, simple text about St Patrick’s Day traditions and symbols. Students then check their understanding by deciding whether each statement is true or false.
The describe the scene activity asks children to colour a festive St Patrick’s Day picture and write sentences describing what they can see using descriptive language and prepositions.
The “I am lucky because…” worksheet encourages learners to practise sentence structures such as I can, I am and I have, while reflecting on things they feel lucky or grateful for.
Students can also explore the theme of luck in the lucky or unlucky? discussion activity, where they decide whether different objects or events are lucky or unlucky and explain their reasoning.
Finally, the creative writing activity invites children to answer creative questions. This imaginative task allows learners to practise sentence building while using new vocabulary in a creative context.

Listening and Speaking Activities
Interactive games help bring the theme to life and encourage students to use new vocabulary in context.
The St Patrick’s Day bingo game is a lively whole-class activity where learners listen carefully as the teacher calls combinations such as “green shamrock” or “yellow horseshoe” and mark the pictures on their bingo card.
The spot the difference activity can be used as a pair work speaking game. Students describe their pictures to each other in order to identify the ten differences between the two scenes.
The dominoes game reinforces vocabulary recognition while encouraging interaction between learners as they match pictures and words.
These activities help develop listening, speaking and observation skills in a natural and playful way.

Creative Crafts
Creative projects are always popular with younger learners and help reinforce language learning through hands-on activities.
The pull-down pot of gold craft allows children to create a fun St Patrick’s Day decoration while practising themed vocabulary.
The pop-up leprechaun mouth card craft is another playful activity where students design and colour their own leprechaun character.
Craft activities give learners the opportunity to practise English in a relaxed way while encouraging creativity and fine motor skills.

A Example St Patrick’s Day Lesson Plan
You can easily combine several of these activities into a fun and balanced St Patrick’s Day lesson.
- Warm-up: Begin by introducing key St Patrick’s Day words such as shamrock, rainbow, leprechaun, pot of gold, horseshoe and Ireland. A fun way to start the lesson is by playing the memory game, where students match picture cards with the correct words. This helps learners become familiar with the new vocabulary in a playful way.
- Vocabulary Practice: Once students recognise the vocabulary, reinforce it with the crossword activity. Using picture clues, learners complete the puzzle while practising spelling and recalling the new words.
- Reading Activity: Next, give students the St Patrick’s Day reading worksheet and ask them to read the short text about the celebration. Students then complete the true or false quiz to check their understanding.
- Speaking Activity: For a communicative task, use the spot the difference activity. Students work in pairs and describe their pictures to each other in order to find the ten differences between the two scenes. This encourages descriptive language and careful listening.
- Creative Activity: After the speaking activity, students can complete the leprechaun craft activity, creating their own St Patrick’s Day character while practising themed vocabulary.
- Fun Ending Activity: To finish the lesson, play a whole-class St Patrick’s Day bingo game. Call combinations such as “green shamrock” or “yellow horseshoe”, and ask students to mark the pictures on their bingo card. This is a lively and enjoyable way to end the lesson.
By combining vocabulary, reading, speaking and creative activities, you can create a lively lesson that keeps learners engaged while celebrating St Patrick’s Day in the classroom.
